What is "Soni Art"?

The phenomenon of "Soni Art" is a unique expression of creativity taking the form of fine quality art. Soni Art was born in 1982 when, local artist, Achmat Soni created his first masterpiece. Inspired while reading the Quranic pages he attempted to paint the “Opening Chapter – Al- Fatiha”.

Since its birth, Soni Art has evolved, adapting itself to a changing environment. It’s initial direction came out of the cultural isolation experienced during the years of apartheid. It is partly due to this isolation that Soni Art was able to adopt a style so unique and different.

Since then Soni Art has grown to include 3 dedicated artists, Achmat Soni, Shaheen Soni and Tasneem Chilwan-Soni. This family trio produce art pieces that differ in style and personal touch. Each art piece, however, shares a common essence which is summed up simply as "Soni Art". The art works reflect quality and with the use of vibrant colour and unique design they attempt to dazzle the mind and inspire the soul. Art works range from traditional and abstract contemporary paintings to hand painted ostrich shells. Each art piece exhibits an East meets Africa appeal and guarantees exclusivity in an almost redundant art market-place – a sure investment for those who appreciate true quality and individuality.

Soni Art has since travelled throughout South Africa as well as abroad to countries that include Pakistan, Tunisia, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. The proof of excellence lies in its acceptance into over 28 pray buildings (mosques), taking the form of wall and ceiling murals throughout South Africa and recently Gaberone Botswana. The SONI ART STUDIO, situated in Belvedere Claremont, is proud to be the home of the Soni Original.
